“It’s a clear January morning as I drive through the Santa Clara Valley. Three years ago when I started this project I hardly knew this special valley so close to my home in Santa Barbara. Many memories come back to me as I look up at Topatopa and Santa Paula Peak on my left and the rounded hills of South Mountain on my right. In between these two ranges lie the stands of dark green eucalyptus and the new yellow leaves of the lemon orchards. Workers are picking row crops along Briggs Road. The low winter sun glints silver off a tin barn roof. The Santa Clara River can’t be seen from the road but the artists and I have taken a number of hikes over to its shallow banks to paint. This watershed has supported farming for many generations.”
